Chapter Five

Taylor saw the sheriff back to his car. The man had arrived in a timely-enough fashion, but then he wouldn’t leave. Having latched onto Taylor’s theory, he had called a number of individuals to gather reports on the former owner. Dale Roberts had stolen over thirty-thousand dollars of the investment money his clients had entrusted to him. Only twelve thousand of that sum had ever been recovered, making Taylor’s theory a viable one.

In 1992, Roberts had been convicted and served eight years of a fifteen-year sentence, only to end up right back in jail for failing to report to his parole officer. Since then, he’d committed a rash of crimes, including fraud and grand larceny that kept him incarcerated until finally being freed, on parole, just two months ago.

“Shouldn’t take us long to find him,” the sheriff assured Taylor as he finally got into his car. “I’ve got the shoe molds and a couple of good fingerprints. We’ll get him on breaking and entering this time.”

Taylor watched the cruiser take off, its brake lights flaring briefly at the head of the driveway. Realizing night had fallen, he limped back to the porch where Becca sat on the swing, looking tuckered out.

“I should probably go,” he told her, loath to leave her alone, even though he’d covered her broken window with plywood.

“Right. Let’s get Blue out of the kennel for you.” As she pushed to her feet, she looked around as if missing something. “Where’s Goldie?” she wondered aloud. “Hold on a second,” she added, going back into the house and calling for her dog.

A moment later, her voice cried out on a note of excitement. “Taylor!”

He trailed her into the house, then shut the door behind him. “Where are you?”

“Up in my room. Come on up.”

The urgency in her voice had him limping as swiftly as possible up the stairs. He had guessed Goldie was about to whelp before he even spotted the dog from the doorway, curled up in what looked like a large, cushioned bowl in one corner of Becca’s large room. Becca herself was seated on the floor at a respectful distance from the bowl, wearing gloves and holding onto a bucket.

She glanced up at Taylor’s entrance. “Don’t move too quickly,” she advised. “Have a seat on my bed so you’re not too close. We don’t want to upset her. She’s going to birth the first pup any minute now.”

Sitting on Becca’s bed put a funny feeling in Taylor’s stomach. He smoothed the down comforter with his palm while glancing curiously around the room. Pale lavender walls, large windows set into a pentagonal alcove, and tasteful antique furniture all spoke to Becca’s loving restoration. Focusing on the drama in front of him, he realized Becca was completely prepared. In addition to the trash bin, she had a laundry basket standing at the ready, with a heating pad turned on low, plus another box filled with clean rags and supplies, all within easy reach.

“Here it comes,” she breathed on a note of wonder.
